Dark-sky places in Wisconsin
Wisconsin's certified dark-sky place is Newport State Park, at the far end of the Door Peninsula. Open water and a thinly settled peninsula keep its skies dark, and its Lake Michigan shoreline gives wide views to the east.

Stargazing in Wisconsin
Wisconsin’s best-protected dark sky is at the tip of the Door Peninsula, which reaches far into Lake Michigan in the northeast of the state. Newport State Park, at the end of the peninsula, became a certified International Dark Sky Park in 2017. Lake Michigan to the east and Green Bay to the west mean there are no large cities close by, and DarkSky International points out that the stretch of open water between the peninsula’s tip and the mainland makes the darkness there easier to defend in the future. Newport is the only certified dark-sky place in Wisconsin.
Newport State Park
Newport State Park covers about 2,370 acres of forest, wetland and meadow with 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, and it is Wisconsin’s only wilderness-designated state park. The Wisconsin DNR describes it as a quiet alternative to busy Door County, with 30 miles of hiking trails and backpack camping instead of drive-in sites. DarkSky International notes that the park has run astronomy and night-darkness programs for decades and has brought its small amount of outdoor lighting into line with dark-sky guidelines. The open shoreline gives a low eastern horizon over the water, good for watching stars and planets rise.
Questions and answers
Can you see the northern lights from Newport State Park?
Sometimes, during strong geomagnetic storms. Look north over the lake on clear nights and check our Wisconsin northern lights forecast.
Is Newport State Park good for camping and stargazing?
Yes. The park offers backpack camping in a wilderness-designated setting, so you can stay out after dark without driving home through bright towns.
Why is Door County darker than the rest of Wisconsin?
The tip of the peninsula is sparsely populated and separated from the mainland by miles of water, so there are few large light sources nearby.
How do I plan a dark-sky trip in Wisconsin around the Moon?
Aim for the week around the new Moon; a bright Moon hides all but the brightest stars. Check the moon-free nights listed above or our Moon calendar, and see our guide to dark-sky places for how the different certifications compare.
